About us:
Britannia Woods Community Services (BWCS) is a vital, trusted anchor in the community, deeply committed to improving well-being, strengthening belonging, and creating equitable opportunities for individuals and families. For decades, we have served as a safe, grassroots hub where families know they will be seen, heard, and supported. We provide culturally responsive programs and wraparound supports in areas such as child and youth development, mental health and wellness, community development, advocacy, and food security, ensuring that our services are deeply rooted in the very neighborhoods we serve.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic, community-minded therapist to be an integral member of the Britannia Woods Community Services Mental Health team, to provide highly accessible mental health services to Black, racialized, low-income and equity-deserving individuals and families. This is not a traditional, behind-closed-doors clinical role; it is a deeply community-focused position. Working from trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, harm reduction, and equity-based frameworks, the role bridges rigorous clinical psychotherapy and grassroots community-based support. You will be a visible, trusted presence, ensuring clients receive coordinated, wrap-around care whether they are in our office, participating in community outreach, or within their own neighborhood settings.
Under the direction of the Clinical Director, the therapist supports racialized communities through specialized clinical psychotherapy, therapeutic dialogue, systemic advocacy, resource navigation, and community education. By dismantling traditional barriers to mental healthcare, this role helps individuals and families manage the emotional and behavioral impacts of complex trauma, systemic inequities, and life stressors, all while strengthening intergenerational connection, community resilience, and holistic wellness
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Therapy: Provide intake, psychosocial assessments, and evidence-based short-term individual, family, and group psychotherapy (utilizing modalities such as CBT, DBT, EFT, or solution-focused therapy), tailored specifically to resonate within a community context.
- Crisis & Stabilization: Deliver immediate crisis intervention, safety planning, and de-escalation support for individuals experiencing acute mental health or situational distress, acting as a responsive and trusted grounding force within the community.
- System Navigation & Advocacy: Walk alongside clients to help them navigate complex healthcare, housing, income support, and legal systems; actively advocate for clients facing institutional discrimination or barriers to care, empowering them to assert their rights within these systems.
- Community Collaboration: Partner and consult with schools, child welfare agencies, local hospitals, and grassroots community groups to ensure coordinated care and strengthen the collective safety net of the neighborhood.
- Case Management: Maintain a caseload by providing ongoing care coordination, treatment planning, referrals to alternative community resources, and thoughtful discharge planning that ensures long-term community integration.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical notes, intake forms, and statistics in compliance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), applicable privacy requirements, and professional college standards.
- Clinical Supervision: Actively participate in and make use of ongoing clinical supervision to continuously refine community-based clinical practice.
- Community Engagement: Promote the agency’s mission by presenting services to partner organizations and community groups as needed, acting as an ambassador for mental wellness and destigmatizing therapy in everyday community spaces.
- Team Collaboration: Assume other related responsibilities as assigned by the Clinical Director to support team wellness.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Master’s degree in counselling psychology, social work (MSW), or a related social science field.
- Professional Registration: Must be a member in good standing with a regulated provincial college authorized to practice the controlled act of psychotherapy (e.g., CRPO or OCSWSSW in Ontario).
- Clinical Specialization: Post-degree certifications or specialized advanced training in trauma-informed care and complex trauma recovery, as well as evidence-based interventions for anxiety, depression, and systemic stress (e.g., CCTP, clinical trauma specialist training, or advanced modalities focused on complex PTSD).
- Culturally Rooted: Deep knowledge of Black, low-income, and equity-deserving communities in Ottawa is highly valued, as this role relies heavily on building and maintaining community trust. Relevant lived experience and a demonstrated ability to provide culturally responsive care are considered strong assets.
- Experience: 2-5 years of clinical experience providing therapy, community dialogue, and group facilitation, preferably within a community health centre, outreach setting, or with equity-deserving populations, demonstrating a clear capability to take clinical work outside traditional clinic walls.
- Framework: Strong, demonstrated alignment with anti-oppressive practice (AOP), harm-reduction, equity, and culturally safe care models.
- Communication & Languages: Being able
to communicate, read, and write in English and French is mandatory. This role
also requires exceptional interpersonal and cross-cultural communication
skills. Having other cultural language capacity widely spoken within local
newcomer or racialized communities (e.g., Arabic, Somali) is considered a major
asset. - Mobility: A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required for community outreach, embedded neighborhood interventions, and home visits.
