About us:

Britannia Woods Community House (BWCH) was established in 1976 to provide social, educational, and recreational support to families living in the Britannia Woods community and surrounding areas.

Over the last 40 years BWCH programming has grown from neighborhood based to city-wide, to respond to the needs of community members. We have played a key role in the innovation, development, and implementation of prescriptive programs/supports tailored to Black, racialized, and low-income families. Our tailored support focuses on mental and emotional health, educational and social capacity, violence/abuse, systems change and best practices to respond to chronic need disparities. We intend on building on our learning, successes, and established trust with community members to build a strong and vibrant community-centered agency. The vision is to support children, youth, and their families to realize and reimagine their ultimate health and wellbeing.

Position Summary:

BWCH is seeking a Capacity Building Manager to work alongside senior management to provide technical expertise and capacity building assistance. Capacity building activities will be in a broad range of organizational areas, including strategic planning, evaluation, project management and human resource development, communications and engagement, facilitation. Responsibilities require a strong knowledge of not for profits, organizational development, administration, and management systems. The Capacity Building Manager will serve as the focal point and/or team leader for capacity building plans and assessments.

Key Capacity Building Results to Be Achieved:

Strategic Planning

– Work with the Board of Directors, consultants and senior management to assist in the development of a new strategic plan that will update the Britannia Woods Community House’s vision, mandate, mission statement, values, strategic goals and service model
– Lead consultants in ensuring agreed upon deliverables are satisfactorily met

Communication Strategy

– Develop internal and external communication strategy in collaboration with consultants and employees, and the Board of Directors.
– Developing a strategy for organizational rebranding (logo, social platforms, website)

Human Resources Management Plan

– Work with consultants and senior management to refine our Human Resource Management Process
– Ensure that the BWCH’s policies and processes in human resources, including remuneration, professional development, and performance appraisal, are robust and transparent, in line with labour and market practices
– Lead consultants in ensuring agreed upon deliverables are satisfactorily met

Risk Analysis and Risk Management Policy Development

– Oversee the development risk management policy in close cooperation with consultants and senior management

Policies and Procedures Review

– Lead the evaluation and updating of organizational policies and procedures in collaboration senior management to ensure alignment with best practices in the social services sector
– Reviewing and updating Board governance policies with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors

Evaluation and Program Theory/Theory of Change

– Guide efforts to improve Britannia Woods’ evaluative processes, including providing recommendations on processes to inform community programming based on evaluation findings
– Support the development of a cohesive organizational service delivery model
– Participate in the development of designing evaluations and assessments tools

Marketing and Fundraising strategy

– Develop a fundraising strategy and plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff, and consultants

Project Management and Administration

– Create versatile project management tools in collaboration with key personnel, focusing on tracking, collaboration, planning, and reporting
– Assist in the management and coordination of all capacity-related activities
– Assist in the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of consultants/contractors
– As needed, coordinate committee meetings, materials, and other logistics
– Analyze gathered data and statistics and create reports to identify key issues in order to inform recommendations
– Create a final report detailing the findings and recommendations
– Management of general records
– Plus, other relevant tasks assigned by the Executive Director and mutually identified


– A post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline, as well as five years of progressive experience, or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience
– Minimum 5 years of experience managing organizational development or institutional training programs, including business process management, change management, organizational capacity building, training management, and management consulting
– Experience using structured approaches and tools to assess and improve organizational performance and capacity
– Strong facilitation and writing abilities
– Ability to produce well written reports and communications in tight deadlines
– Ability to work effectively with Board members and volunteers
– Familiarity with multi-service community organization
– Demonstrated commitment to equity, anti-racism and anti-oppression and dedicated to working within a positive and supportive workplace and team culture
– Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
